Because its architecture feels incongruous with its location and desertion, I, like others, have spent many days exploring the vacated town of Rodney, Mississippi—a city once three votes shy of being the state capital.

When, in January of 2016, the Mississippi river flooded its banks and crept miles inland to Rodney, I was compelled to see for myself. Carrying a Hasselblad 500 c/m and wearing borrowed waders, I cautiously crept into the floodwaters as dawn broke that first morning.

What had become familiar to me on land was now alien and mysterious in water. Then, as quickly and quietly as the river appeared, one day it was gone—back to the confines of its banks.

I am not the first to watch in wonder as the water rises, nor will I be the last.
